The Hobbit

While "Mirkwood Elf" isn't a specific named character in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, the term refers collectively to the Elves of Mirkwood, a woodland realm encountered by Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves.

These Elves, also known as Silvan Elves or Wood-elves, are descendants of the Nandor, a group that separated from the Great Journey of the Elves. Their king is Thranduil, a Sindarin Elf who rules from his halls deep within the forest. Unlike the High Elves of Rivendell, the Mirkwood Elves are more reclusive and wary of outsiders, hardened by the dangers of their forest home and their conflicts with spiders and other creatures of shadow.

The dwarves are captured by the Mirkwood Elves after straying into their territory. The Elves imprison them, suspecting their intentions and guarding their realm against potential threats. Bilbo, using the One Ring, eventually frees the dwarves and they escape via the river, marking a significant point of conflict and distrust between dwarves and elves that plays a role in the subsequent events of the Battle of Five Armies.
